The site for the house is on a steep hill overlooking the Rhine valley. Being blessed with extreme views to the far horizon towards France on one side, along the Rhine valley on the other side and towards the Black forest Mountains on the back, the site is as well in close proximity to three existing houses at the adjoining sites. 

This complex grid of great views and deliberate blind spots dictated a series of walls hiding the neighbouring buildings and openings giving an almost unlimited and unobstructed view across the landscape towards the horizon.

Each room gets a specific view. Blinkers around the windows create an even deeper section of the wall, blocking out views and shading the rooms at the same time. 

The house changes the site as little as possible. All the surfaces on the outside are either grass-concrete blocks or a green roof with less than 10% of the surfaces sealed. Heated through an air-source heating pump and highly insulated walls, floors and ceiling it is built to German Passive House standard. 

In the interior the whole house is only one big room stretching over three levels. All the floors are natural grey slate or natural oak. All concrete in the house is left visible.

Eine optimale Ausnutzung der raeumlichen Resourcen ermoeglicht einen weiteren Raum zu erschliessen. Alle Services sind in ein 'halbes' U-Boot eingebaut und schaffen so neue Freiraeume.

public and private zones are interwoven over three levels-opening up, encapsulating, and divided by a three-dimensional skin.this is defined and experienced as one single space. in contrast to the natural surroundings and orientated towards views into the rhine valley and the black forest, the house is in-between inside and outside throughout the seasons which fluctuate levels of light and shadow. 

the house is an attempt to redefine living and life as an ongoing process. the structure, a steel space frame, and the body, a concrete shell, are covered in materials rather than colours. using natural aluminium and glass for the windows, redwood facades and zinc for the roof, colour alternates throughout the day, adopting and reflecting the surrounding light, the trees and the sky.

Öffenliche und private Zonen über 3 Ebenen miteinander verwoben – sich öffnend, eingehüllt und abgetrennt von einer 3-dimensionalen Haut – verstanden und erlebbar als ein einziger Raum – völlig im Gegensatz zur umgebenden Natur aber sich ausrichtend nach dieser und vorbestimmten Ausblicken in das Rheintal und den umgebenden Schwarzwald – lebt und erlebt man außen und innen – mit den wechselnden Jahreszeiten und sich immer verändernten Lichtqualitäten. Dieses Wohnhaus entsteht als Versuch "Leben" und "Wohnen" immer wieder und immer neu zu definieren.

Neuland zu betreten kann als Möglichkeit verstanden werden ohne (hinderliche) Geschichte oder Traditionen zu agieren. Utopia, Eldorado und Atlantis sind nicht reell existent. Der "Treck" nach Westen führt lediglich dahin wo man begonnen hat. Neuland ist die kreative Nische in der Gesellschaft.

 ‘the project brief was to fit out an empty concrete shell for a young couple. 
unit 63 is sited in an old warehouse at the canal.

A device was introduced which, on one side divided and organised the open space, and, one the inside, offered storage for all the things we accumulate during our life. this apparatus sits in the context of the shell without denying its presence. where touching it the old and the new elements are clearly divided. colours create a range of ‘rooms’ for different uses. 
the system offered can be redefined and altered according the changes in the daily routines of the user – space and functions are elements of an open game.'

‘In eine vorgefundene Betonschale eines alten Lagerhauses am Kanal werden Bereiche und Zuordnungen des Lebens als ineinander übergehende Zonen definiert. Eine Maschinerie wird implantiert die (ER)LEBEN ermöglicht ohne den Kontext zu negieren oder zu verändern. Die Offenheit des angebotenen Systems steht im graßen Gegensatz zu den Zwängen der Benutzung und den Konventionen der Benutzer. Der Umgang mit dem System im Alltag spannt sich zwischen den Beziehungen zum Raum und den veschiedenen Abläufen der Bewegungen zwischen den einzelnen "Räumen".'
